BYU Fine Arts and Entertainment Calendar for November 2004

At the Museum of Art:

A major new exhibition titled "Art of the Ancient Mediterranean World: Egypt, Greece, Rome" will run until June 4, 2005, at the BYU Museum of Art. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for students and $18 for families of up to six people. Admission is free for children 5 years old and younger and BYU students and employees. The 204 works displayed in the exhibition span a period from predynastic times in Egypt, 6000 years ago, to the Roman late imperial period, about 350 A.D. The exhibition is from the renowned collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Free exhibits now on display at the museum include:

"150 Years of American Painting," a permanent collection of paintings by renowned artists such as Frederic Edwin Church, Maynard Dixon, John Singer Sargent and many local Utah favorites including Mahonri Young. The exhibit will be displayed until June 2005.

"Metaphorically Speaking: Contemporary Religious Art" available through Jan. 8, 2005. The exhibit explores the use of visual symbols as parables and metaphors to open new levels of inquiry and understanding.

"Christ Healing the Sick at Bethesda" by Carl Bloch, part of the museum's permanent collection is on display in the main lobby area.

Every Monday night in the Museum of Art auditorium there will be storytelling for all ages. The Artful Tales program is free and gives two 35-minute presentations at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. The 7 p.m. presentation is geared toward families from the community and the 8 p.m. presentation is geared toward university students. The goal of this program is to help people develop a better connection with and understanding of Greek beliefs.

Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays; and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. For more information on exhibits and museum programs, call (801) 378-ARTS.

Museum of Art Lecture Series:

Thursday, November 4

The director of the BYU Museum of Peoples and Cultures, Marti Allen, will present a lecture at 7 p.m. in the Museum of Art Auditorium entitled "Graeco-Roman Terracotta Figurines from Egypt: A Multicultural Tour de Force." The lecture is free and open to the public.

Thursday, November 18

Assistant professor of humanities, classics and comparative literature, Cecilia Peek, will give a lecture on "The Goddess-Queen in Ptolemaic Egypt," at 7 p.m. in the Museum of Art Auditorium. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Tuesday through Saturday November 2-6

Brigham Young University's Theatre and Media Arts Department's annual film festival "Final Cut" is the highlight of the year for a group of students who express their talents with an eye to the camera. For more information and tickets call (801) 422-4313.

Bus Stop features all six of the seniors graduating with a BFA in acting. There will be no shows on Sundays or Mondays. Preview nights are Wednesday and Thursday Nov. 3-4. All shows start at 7:30 p.m. in the Margetts Theatre with a matinee performance on Nov. 13 at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are $12 and $3 off with student ID. Thursday, November 4

The Alison Brown Quartet featuring Andrea Zorn will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Brown has achieved an international reputation as a banjo player for pushing the instrument out of its familiar Appalachian settings and into new musical territory. She composed and played her way into the affections of jazz-hued acoustic music fans with a unique voice on a relatively unexplored instrument. Tickets are $12 and $2 off with student ID. BYU Jazz Voices and Vocal Jazz will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Kelly Eisenhour will direct. Admission is free.

William Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew" will run in the Pardoe Theatre. Directed by Barta Lee Heiner, Shakespeare's battle of the sexes features sparring wit and extreme physicality. The skirmish ensues when Petruccio "come[s] to wive it wealthily [and] happily in Padua." You've seen the movie. You've seen the musical. Now come see the original comedy that inspired it all. Join Petruccio and Katherine as they explore the compromise we call love. Shows start at 7:30 p.m. every night with a matinee on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 2 p.m. Preview nights are Nov. 10-11. The Utah Symphony, under the direction of Keith Lockhart with Wendy Warner on the cello, will perform works by Daugherty, Barber and Strauss at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Principal bassoonist Douglas Craig selected the piece "Hell's Angels" by Daugherty to commemorate his retirement after 52 years with the Utah Symphony. Craig and the bassoon section will don black leather as they explore the bluesy riffs, low raucous rumbling and plaintive high intensity of the bassoon. Warner will also perform Barber's masterpiece Cello Concerto. Tickets are $20 and $4 off with student ID. Comprised of James Campbell, Eli Eban and Howard Klug, Trio Woodwinds formed in 1990 when the three professors met at the Indiana University School of Music and decided to demonstrate the versatility of the clarinet family and the great stylistic diversity of its repertoire. BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
