BYU Fine Arts and Entertainment Calendar for March 2015

March 2015

11 - BYU Folk Music Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Mark Geslison directs this student ensemble, skilled at a variety of traditional musical forms including American Cajun, bluegrass, Celtic and much more. Tickets are now available.  

11 - BYU Synthesis will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Tickets are now available.

11-14 - US National Amateur DanceSport Championships will be held at the BYU Marriott Center Sports Arena. The DanceSport competition will feature dancers from across the country in more than 30 different divisions. National amateur titles will be awarded in Latin, standard, smooth, rhythm, cabaret, and formation in all age categories. Tickets are now available.

12 - Jazz Combo Night will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free. 

13 - BYU Singers & Concert Choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Conducted by Ronald Staheli and Rosalind Hall, the BYU School of Music's two premier choral ensembles present an evening of classical, sacred, and contemporary works. Tickets are now available. 

13-14 - DanceEnsemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theatre (169 Richards Building). There will be a 2 p.m. performance on March 14. BYU dancEnsemble focuses on presenting new student choreography through evenings of performance that are as fresh and diverse as the artistic voices it encompasses. Tickets are now available. 

17 - Guest Artist Sidney King will perform at 6 p.m. at the University Parkway Center, Rm 229. Admission is free. 

17 - Lynn Harrell and BYU Philharmonic will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. The renowned soloist, conductor, and teacher "a musician in the highest echelon of today's performing artists" joins the BYU School of Music's flagship orchestra for Antonín Dvo'ák's lyrical and romantic Cello Concerto in B minor. Tickets are now available.

18 - Lynn Harrell and BYU Philharmonic will perform at 8:00 p.m. at Abravanel Hall in Salt Lake City. The renowned soloist, conductor, and teacher "a musician in the highest echelon of today's performing artists" joins the BYU School of Music's flagship orchestra for Antonín Dvo'ák's lyrical and romantic Cello Concerto in B minor. Tickets are free and will be available in the Abravanel Hall lobby the evening of the performance.

19 - BYU Chamber Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Tickets are now available.

19 - Trombone Choir will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

20 - BYU Men's Chorus will perform at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Tickets are now available. 

March 20-21, 24-27, 31 April 1-3 - The Winter's Tale will be performed at 7:30 p.m. in the Pardoe Theatre. Saturday matinees will be held March 21 and 28 at 2 p.m. An ASL interpreted performance will held on March 26. Myth and misunderstanding intersect as a cast of colorful and passionate characters search for their happy ending in this tragicomedy, one of Shakespeare's last plays. Tickets are now available. 

21 - BYU Women's Chorus will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Tickets are now available.

21 - BYU International Folk Dance Ensemble will perform at 7:30 p.m. at Timpview High School's Auditorium. In this show you will see Irish hard shoe, American clogging, Ukrainian Hopak, exotic Indian dances, and many more. The experience of the furious footwork, the pulsing rhythms, the live music, and the authentic costumes will leave you with a special kind of wanderlust. So throw off the bowlines and catch the wind in your sails as our companion on this Journey. Tickets are now available.

21 - Family Concert Series: A Singing Adventure will be held at 11 a.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Two of the BYU School of Music's celebrated choral ensembles present a special concert of choral classics for families. Make family memories by attending the Family Concert Series, created to introduce the joy of music to children. All family members are encouraged to attend regardless of age. Pick up free family passes at the Harris Fine Arts Center Ticket Office or the Marriott Center Ticket Office. Tickets are now available.

24 - Guest Artist Jack Unzicker will perform at 6:30 p.m. at the University Parkway Center, Rm 229. Admission is free.

25 - Saxophone Chamber Night will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Tanner Building, Rm 251. Admission is free.

26 - Living Legends will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.  Living Legends capture the essence of ancient and modern culture in a panorama of Latin American, Native American, and Polynesian song and dance. Tickets are now available.

27 - BYU Singers 30th Anniversary Concert will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Tickets are now available. 

27 - Woodwind Chamber Night will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the University Parkway Center, Rm 313. Admission is free. 

28 - Harp Solo & Ensemble will be held at 3 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

28 - Faculty Artist Lawrence Green will perform at 2 p.m. at BYU's Museum of Art Auditorium. Admission is free.

5 - Contemporary Art Lecture: Kamrooz Aram will speak at 4 p.m. as part of the BYU Museum of Art's Contemporary Art Series.

7 - Open Studio will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, on the first and third Saturday of each month. Families can drop in to participate in Open Studio, a free-choice, self-guided art making experience related to one of the Museum's current exhibitions.

12 - Guest Lecture: Caru Das will speak at 7 p.m. in conjunction withLoving Devotion: Visions of Vishnu, President and founder of the Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple in Spanish Fork will discuss the vibrant role of the popular Holi Festival of Colors in Hindu devotion.

19 - Guest Lecture: Robert Lang will speak at 7 p.m. in conjunction withFolding Paper: The Infinite Possibilities of Origami.

20 - Guest Lecture: Gordon Bowen co-founder of world-renowned advertising agency McGarryBowen, and art collector, will speak on the intersection of sculpture and advertising, both focused on the world of images at 2 p.m.

20 - Friday Evening Music: Brevitas will perform at 6 p.m. in the galleries of BYU's Museum of Art.

21 - Open Studio will be held from 10 a.m. to noon, on the first and third Saturday of each month. Families can drop in to participate in Open Studio, a free-choice, self-guided art making experience related to one of the Museum's current exhibitions.

26 - Contemporary Art Lecture: Michael Rooks will speak at 5 p.m. Rooks is the High Museum Contemporary Art Curator and will speak in conjunction with the MOA's Contemporary Art Lecture Series.

BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.

BYU team helps create diagnostic tool that achieves accuracy of PCR tests with faster, simpler nanopore system

A new diagnostic tool developed by Brigham Young University and UC Santa Cruz researchers can test for SARS-CoV-2 and Zika virus with the same or better accuracy as high-precision PCR tests in a matter of hours.
