BYU Fine Arts and Entertainment Calendar for February 2007

Thursday, Feb. 1

“Cougarettes in Concert 2007” will grace the stage Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 1-3, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pardoe Theatre in the Harris Fine Arts Center at Brigham Young University. There will be a matinee performance on Saturday, Feb. 3, at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Center Ticket Office, by calling (801) 422-7664 or by visiting artix.byu.edu.

Friday, Feb. 2

The Deseret Piano Trio will be featured at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free. The trio includes faculty members Jeffrey Shumway on the piano, Monte Belknap on the violin and Julie Bevan on the cello. There will be one quartet piece, which will include fellow faculty member Claudine Bigelow on the viola.

Wednesday, Feb. 7-Saturday, Feb. 17

Audiences will watch the classic 15-story set, “Metamorphoses,” by Ovid, come to life in the Nelke Theatre. Shows will begin at 7:30 Wednesday, Feb. 7, and run through Saturday, Feb. 17. There will be no performances Sundays or Mondays. Tickets are $10 or $6 weeknights and $7 weekends with a BYU or student ID. Thursday, Feb. 8

The Music/Dance/Theatre Showcase will be held at 7 and 9 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Feb. 8-9, in the Madsen Recital Hall. Tickets are on sale now for $9 or $6 with a BYU or student ID. Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, by calling (801) 422-7664 or by visiting artix.byu.edu.

BYU’s Living Legends, a performing group which features music and dance from the Polynesian, American Indian and Latin American cultures, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 8-10, in the de Jong Concert Hall on BYU campus. Tickets are $10 or $8 with a BYU or student ID. Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, by calling (801) 422-7664 or by visiting artix.byu.edu.

Friday, Feb. 9

“The Fantastic Mr. Fox” by Roald Dahl will be presented in both American Sign Language and English Friday and Saturday, Feb. 9-10, at 7:30 p.m. in the Pardoe Theatre in the Harris Fine Arts Center. There will also be a matinee at 2 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is $10, with a $4 discount for students and children. Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, by calling (801) 422-7664 or by visiting artix.byu.edu.

Saturday, Feb. 10

The artists-in-residence at the Steinhardt School of Music at New York University, the Quintet of the Americas, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The quintet includes Edward R. Gilmore on the clarinet, Sato Moughalian on flute, Barbara Oldham on horn, Matt Sullivan on oboe and Laura Koepke on bassoon. Tickets are $12 or $8 with a BYU or student ID. Saturday, Feb. 10

The International Folk Dance Ensemble's touring company will present their last local showcase of the season at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 10 in the Mountain View High School Auditorium. Admission is $5 and tickets can be purchased at the door. (This is a venue change from their previously announced show.)

Tuesday, Feb. 13

The BYU Singers and Concert Choir will perform a combined concert, to be conducted by Ronald Staheli and Rosalind Hall, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall Feb. 13 and 15. Tickets are $9 or $6 with a BYU or student ID. Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, by calling (801) 422-7664 or by visiting performances.byu.edu.

Wednesday, Feb. 14

The BYU Crescent Jazz Festival Kickoff Concert will feature BYU Jazz Voices, directed by Kelly Eisenhour, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

David Blackinton and Don Peterson will conduct the BYU Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Tickets are $9 or $6 with a BYU or student ID. Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, by calling (801) 422-7664 or by visiting artix.byu.edu.

Thursday, Feb. 15

Group for New Music, BYU’s avant-garde and new music ensemble, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Maeser Building auditorium. Admission is free.

The BYU Crescent Jazz Festival continues with the Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band, directed by Steve Call, in the Madsen Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

Friday, Feb. 16

Monte Belknap and Barbara Allen will perform their second of three recitals featuring the 10 Beethoven violin and piano sonatas at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Repertory Dance Theatre, a modern dance company based in Salt Lake City, will be performing at 7:30 p.m. in the Pardoe Theatre. Admission will be $8 for students and faculty, $12 for alumni and seniors and $16 for the public. Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, by calling (801) 422-7664 or by visiting performances.byu.edu.

A variety of artists will present the “Maynard Ferguson Tribute Concert: Into the Stratosphere” as part of the BYU Crescent Jazz Festival. The concert will take place at 7 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall and will feature Peter Erskine, Eric Miyashiro, Dave Pietro, the Crescent Festival Orchestra (directed by Ray Smith), the Crescent Super Band (directed by Caleb Chapman), the Juilliard Faculty Trio, Kelly Eisenhour, and Salsiology (directed by Denson Angulo). Saturday, Feb. 17

The last major concert in the BYU Crescent Jazz Festival, the Daily Herald “Maynard Ferguson Tribute Concert: High Voltage,” will be held at 7 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall and will feature Bobby Shew, Roger Ingram, Denis DiBlasio, the Crescent Festival Orchestra (directed by Ray Smith), Synthesis (directed by Ray Smith), Q’d Up, and the New Voodoo Swing Orchestra (directed by Caleb Chapman). Tickets can be purchased at the Fine Arts Center Ticket Office, by calling (801) 422-7664 or by visiting artix.byu.edu.

Tuesday, Feb. 20

The BYU Philharmonic Orchestra will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Selections will include "The Perfect Fool," "Four Sea Interludes" and "Enigma Variations." Wednesday, Feb. 21

The Men's Chorus and Women's Chorus, conducted by Rosalind Hall and Jean Applonie, will perform in the de Jong Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. BYU student vocalists will present “Opera Scenes” Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 21-24, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

Wednesday, Feb. 28

The Ying Quartet, composed of four siblings, will perform in the Madsen Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Timothy and Janet Ying will play the violin, Phillip Ying will play the viola and David Ying will perform on the cello. BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
