BYU Fine Arts and Entertainment Calendar for February 2005

February Arts Calendar

All month:

A major new exhibition titled "Art of the Ancient Mediterranean World: Egypt, Greece, Rome" will run until June 4, 2005, at the BYU Museum of Art. Tickets are $5 for adults, $4 for seniors, $3 for students and $18 for families of up to six people. Admission is free for children 5 years old and younger and BYU students and employees. The 204 works displayed in the exhibition span a period from predynastic times in Egypt, 6000 years ago, to the Roman late imperial period, about 350 A.D. The exhibition is from the renowned collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.

Free exhibits now on display at the museum include:

  • "150 Years of American Painting," a permanent collection of paintings by renowned artists such as Frederic Edwin Church, Maynard Dixon, John Singer Sargent and many local Utah favorites including Mahonri Young. The exhibit will be displayed until June 2005.

  • "Christ Healing the Sick at Bethesda" by Carl Bloch, part of the museum's permanent collection is on display in the main lobby area.

  • Every Monday night in the Museum of Art auditorium there will be storytelling for all ages. The Artful Tales program is free and offers two 35-minute presentations at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. The 7 p.m. presentation is geared toward families from the community and the 8 p.m. presentation is geared toward university students. The goal of this program is to help people develop a better connection with and understanding of Greek beliefs. Museum hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays; and noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays.     Tuesday, Feb. 1

    Pianist Angela Cheng will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Tickets are $10 with $2 off with BYU or student ID. Hailed by critics for her remarkable technique, tonal beauty and musicianship, Cheng is one of Canada's most gifted pianists.

    Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 2-12

    The Nelke Theatre will feature "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse" at 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays as part of BYU's Young Company/Theatre for Young Audiences. Saturday matinees will be performed Feb. 5 and Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. Previews are Wednesday through Thursday, Feb. 2-3. Audience members are welcome to meet the company on Thursday, Feb. 3 and 10. "Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse" is written by Kevin Henkes, adapted by Kevin Kling and directed by Shawnda Moss.

    Thursday, Feb. 3

    The contemporary music showcase Group for New Music will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

    Saturday, Feb. 5

    School of Music faculty member Claudine Bigelow will perform a viola concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

    Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 10-12

    "Living Legends" will perform Native American, Latin American and Polynesian music and dance Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.     Thursday, Feb. 10

    Professor of ancient scripture Michael Rhodes will lecture on "The Family in Egyptian Art and Literature." The lecture will be presented in the Museum of At Auditorium from 7-8 p.m.

    Thursday and Friday, Feb. 10 and 11

    Friday, Feb. 11

    The Children's Creative Dance performance will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theatre, 166 Richards Building. Tickets are $4. Tickets can be purchased at the Conferences and Workshops Office in 147 Harman Building or at the door.

    Saturday, Feb. 12

    The School of Music presents the Faculty Piano Trio with Jeffrey Shumway, Monte Belknap and Julie Bevan Reed performing works for piano, violin and cello. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

    Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, Feb. 15, 17 and 19

    The "Young Artists of Voice" competition will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday and Saturday and at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

    Wednesday, Feb. 16

    Brassworks, comprised of five professors from the School of Music, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

    Thursday, Feb. 17

    Faculty members Jaren Hinckley and Eric Hansen will perform a clarinet and bass recital at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

    Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 17-19

    "Ballet in Concert" will be performed at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee performance on Saturday at 2 p.m., in the Pardoe Theatre. Jan Dijkwel is the artistic director. Tickets are $8. For tickets, call the Fine Arts Ticket Office at (801) 378-4322 or visit performances.byu.edu.

    Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 17-19

    Tuesday and Wednesday, Feb. 22 and 23

    The Signstage Theatre of Cleveland will perform "Robin Hood: Thief of Hearts" at 7:30 p.m. in the Pardoe Theatre. A matinee will be performed on Wednesday, Feb. 23 at 2 p.m. The play will be presented in American Sign Language and spoken in English by deaf and hearing performers.     Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 23-26

    The BYU Opera Program will present "Opera Scenes" at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

    Thursday, Feb. 24

    Independent Scholar Lance Harding will lecture on "The Art of the Ancient Mediterranean World and the Pythagorean Tradition." The lecture will be presented in the Museum of At auditorium from 7-8 p.m.

    Thursday, Feb. 24

    The Utah Symphony, under the direction of Keith Lockhart with soprano Lisa Vroman, will perform works by Butterworth, Barber and Vaughn Williams at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. George Butterworth — one of the bright lights of British pastoral composition — put his music aside to serve in World War I and was killed at the age of 32. His "Rhapsody" is poignant and peaceful. Vaughn Williams returned from that war, revised his "A London Symphony" — the most elegant of his nine symphonies, with its sheer orchestral color and magnificent strings — and dedicated it to Butterworth, his friend and collaborator.
