BYU film series features science fiction classics Oct. 27 for Halloween

Two Halloween movies—or, at least they fit the season well — will be screened Friday, Oct. 27, at 7 p.m. in the first floor auditorium of the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University.

“Invasion of the Body Snatchers” and “I Married a Monster from Outer Space,” two films hailing from the science fiction era of the 1950s, are being sponsored by the Motion Picture Archives Film Series.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free, but seating is limited. No food or drink is permitted in the auditorium. Children 8 years and older are welcome. Both films, from the permanent collection of the BYU Motion Picture Archives, will be introduced by archive curator James V. D’Arc.

“Invasion of the Body Snatchers,” which stars Kevin McCarthy as a doctor whose patients tell him that family members aren’t acting like themselves, is a metaphor of an inattentive American public during the Cold War as the Soviet Union lurked abroad, according to D’Arc.

“I Married a Monster from Outer Space” features Gloria Talbott, whose new husband, played by Tom Tryon, seems a little cold himself in this second “body possession” film.

These two films are part of the continuing BYU Motion Picture Archive Film Series, co-sponsored by the L. Tom Perry Special Collections, the Friends of the Harold B. Lee Library and Dennis and Linda Gibson.
