BYU film archive series to screen "Sunset Boulevard" Sept. 9

The Brigham Young University Film Series will screen the original “Sunset Boulevard” Friday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m. in the Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium to begin its 13th season of archived film showings.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Admission is free. Children ages 8 and over are welcome. BYU dress standards apply.

“Sunset Boulevard” was released in 1950 and stars William Holden and Gloria Swanson. The film was nominated for 11 Academy Awards and won three. The classic was ranked 12th by the American Film Institute on its “100 Best American Films of the 20th Century” list.

The story follows an unsuccessful Hollywood screenwriter, Joe Gillis (Holden), as he becomes the writer for and love interest of the washed-up silent film star Norma Desmond (Swanson). When Joe falls for another woman, Norma has other plans.

The BYU Motion Picture Archive Film Series is an ongoing series of classic American motion pictures from the permanent collection of the BYU Motion Picture Archive at BYU’s L. Tom Perry Special Collections. The series is co-sponsored by the L. Tom Perry Special Collections, the Friends of the Harold B. Lee Library, and Dennis & Linda Gibson. A complete series schedules is available online at sc.lib.byu.edu.
