BYU faculty recital to include Alaska-themed works April 12

The Brigham Young University School of Music will present a faculty artist recital featuring lyric mezzo-soprano Ruth Christensen and Jaren Hinckley on the clarinet, accompanied on the piano by Jeffrey Shumway, Wednesday, April 12 at 5:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Admission is free and the public is welcome to attend.

Christensen, Hinckley and Shumway will perform the world premiere of “Alaska,” composed by Hinckley with words by Mary Weston Fordham. The atmospheric piece paints a scene of a land filled with cold and snow, the northern lights and those who came hungry to dig for gold.

The program will highlight Alaska-themed songs that Hinckley originally composed for his friends from Alaska to perform with voice and clarinet, including an arrangement of the “Flag Song of Alaska.” They will also perform a set of songs titled “The Edge of Great Quiet” by Sally Reid. The five songs within the set, arranged for only voice and clarinet, are “On a Day of White Trees,” “Two Stones,” “April,” “Lonely” and “Midnight Sun.”

The recital will also include a set of six folksongs, including “Scenes from Tyneside” by Phyllis Tate, the Mozart operatic “Parto, parto, ma tu ben mio” and “Water Under the Bridge” by Vernon Duke.

For more information, contact Ruth Christensen at (801) 422-8949 or Jaren Hinckley at (801) 422-6339.
