The 10 Beethoven sonatas for violin and piano are a huge challenge for serious musicians, but Monte Belknap, violin, and Barbara Allen, piano, will perform every one of them in a series of Brigham Young University School of Music faculty recitals beginning Friday, Jan. 26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.
Admission is free.
“This first concert will feature No. 2, which is light and fun, No. 5, which is one of the most popular violin-piano sonatas regardless of composer, No. 4, which is more serious and No. 8, which showcases both instruments very well,” according to Belknap.
The follow-up concerts will take place Feb. 15, and March 22.
Monte Belknap is in his fourth year teaching violin at BYU. He is the former concertmaster of the Illinois Symphony and has performed recitals all over the world. Barbara Allen studied with Soulima Stravinsky, son of the famed composer. She has performed in Germany, the former USSR and on the Temple Square Concert Series.
