BYU faculty member honored as best in region by Mathematical Association of America

Tyler Jarvis, associate professor in the BYU Department of Mathematics, has been honored with the Mathematical Association of America’s 2006 Teaching Award for the Intermountain Region.

“The prestigious award honors a professor who excels in teaching undergraduate classes,” said Michael Dorff, associate professor of mathematics. “This is the third time a BYU mathematics faculty member has received such a teaching award, which is an honor to the professors, the Department of Mathematics and the university.”

Previous BYU mathematics faculty award winners include Jim Cannon and Wayne Barrett.

Jarvis received the award based on his skill in teaching students to understand concepts and to reason on their own, his high expectations for his students and his concern for and interest in helping students. He is also a candidate for the national teaching award.

The Mathematical Association of America, with more than 27,000 members, emphasizes making math accessible to undergraduate students. The MAA Intermountain Region includes all colleges and universities in Utah and southern Idaho.
