BYU English Department continues reading series in March and April

Includes Nobel Prize-winning author Derek Walcott on April 8

The English Department at Brigham Young University continues its program of free readings by authors from around the world at noon on Fridays in the Harold B. Lee Library auditorium.

A short reception with light refreshments will follow each reading. The following is the list of authors scheduled for March and April:

March 4 — Jim Barnes is an author who has published eight books of poetry as wells as a work of creative non-fiction. His short stories and poems have appeared in dozens of anthologies and in such journals as "The American Scholar" and "The North American Review.

March 11 — Galway Kinnell, Pulitzer Prize-winner and National Book Award recipient, is chancellor of the Academy of American Poets. His volumes include "A New Selected Poems" in 2000, "Imperfect Thirst" in 1996 and "When One Has Lived a Long Time Alone" in 1990. He studied at Princeton University and the University of Rochester.

March 18 — Susan Howe, professor of creative writing at BYU, is the author of "Stone Spirits," a collection of poetry that won her the Charles Redd Center Publication Prize in 1996. Last year she edited the book "Discoveries: Two Centuries of Poems by Mormon Women," which was produced as a play and recently been filmed for release as a CD.

April 1 — A series of humorous readings will take place featuring various writers.

April 8 — Derek Walcott, author of more than 20 collections of poems and plays, won the 1992 Nobel Prize for Literature. A professor of the Boston University English Department, Walcott blends his writing in English, Caribbean and African traditions.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
