BYU engineering professor honored by national welding society

A Brigham Young University engineering professor was recently honored by the American Welding Society for his teaching activities.

Tracy Nelson, associate professor of mechanical engineering at BYU, was selected as a co-recipient of the Adams Memorial Membership Award from the AWS.

The award honors educators for outstanding teaching activities in their undergraduate and postgraduate engineering institutions.

Nelson, who was chosen by his peers for the award, is a recognized leader in the area of friction-stir welding and the past recipient of the AWS Professor Koichi Masubuchi Award, the Warren F. Savage Memorial Award, and the International Henry Granjon Award.

He earned bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees from Ohio State University. Nelson has been a professor at BYU since 1997.

The AWS was founded in 1919 as a multifaceted, nonprofit organization with a goal to advance the science, technology and application of welding and related joining disciplines.

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
