BYU Education in Zion exhibit to celebrate Karl G. Maeser's birthday Jan. 16

The “Education in Zion” exhibit at Brigham Young University will celebrate Karl G. Maeser’s 186th birthday Thursday, Jan. 16, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Joseph Fielding Smith Building.

From 11 a.m. to noon, LeGrand “Buddy” Richards will present a lecture on Karl G. Maeser’s life in B192 JFSB, sharing interesting facts and stories from the life of one of the most legendary educators in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and BYU.

Richards, a BYU educational leadership and foundations faculty member, will be publishing a book titled "Called to Teach: The Legacy of Karl G. Maeser" this spring  through the BYU Religious Studies Center to help more people understand the life of this spiritual architect.

From noon to 12:50 p.m., a party will take place at the base of the spiral staircase in the JFSB where guests can eat cake, play games, win prizes and take photos with a Karl G. Maeser cut-out.

“I’ve always thought of Brother Maeser as the Founding Principal of BYU,” said Heather Seferovich, Education in Zion curator. “This is a great opportunity for people to learn more and honor him in a fun way.”

The Education in Zion Gallery shares inspiring stories of education in the Church through film, artwork, photographs and letters. It is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with extended hours on Monday and Wednesday evenings until 9 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information, visit the gallery’s webpage at educationinzion.byu.edu.
