BYU Deseret Piano to premiere work by Dan Visconti in Oct. 25 recital

Brigham Young University’s Deseret Piano Trio will perform a recital Thursday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

The School of Music faculty trio is comprised of Jeffrey Shumway on  piano, Monte Belknap on violin and Michelle Kesler on cello.

The ensemble will perform three major works, including the Piano Trio No. 1 Op. 1 in E Flat Major by Ludwig van Beethoven, the Piano Trio No. 1 Op 8 in C Minor by Dimitri Shostakovich and the Piano Trio “Road Fragments” by Dan Visconti.

“Road Fragments” is a commissioned work from the BYU Barlow Endowment at BYU and this will be the world premiere of the piece.

Shumway is a professor of piano, and he received his bachelor’s degree in music from BYU, his master’s degree from Juilliard School of Music and his doctoral degree from Indiana University. A member of the American Piano Quartet, Shumway has performed worldwide, created his own recordings and published several arranged piano pieces.

Belknap is a professor of violin who received his bachelor’s degree in violin performance and studied orchestral conducting at the University of Cincinnati. He taught at BYU-Idaho at Western Illinois University before coming to BYU. He is a former concertmaster of the Illinois Symphony and Chamber Orchestra and performs regularly at the Park City International Music Festival.

Kesler is professor of cello at BYU. Before joining the faculty at BYU, she received her bachelor’s degree at the University of Colorado in Boulder and her master’s degree at Arizona State University. While pursuing her masters and doctorate degrees, she performed with the Phoenix Symphony, The Arizona Opera and the Phoenix Opera company. She has also played with the Orion, St. Lawrence, Takacs, Tokyo and Brentano string quartets.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
