BYU Dancers' Company to preview concert tour program April 1-2

Brigham Young University's Dancers' Company will preview its 2009 North Central States tour concert Wednesday and Thursday, April 1-2, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theater at the Richards Building.

Tickets at $6 can be purchased at the Harris Fine Arts Ticket Office, by calling 801-422-4322 or by visiting www.byuarts.com.

"This visual and kinetic feast will feature works that range in style from concert contemporary dance to hip hop," said Robin Konie of the modern dance faculty. "These dances will touch your head, your heart and your funny bone. Though the dances change from year to year, the quality remains."

The company will be bringing back "Steppin,'" a dance that blends the unity and power of a military corps with the urban sensibilities of the African-American community. Choreographed by Natasha Washington, this soul-stepping dance highlights the joy and the exhilaration that comes when a group expresses itself through rhythm and precision.

Also on the program will be several numbers from this year’s "Dance in Concert" program, including Carl Flink's "Duet from Wreck," which takes a serious look at how men and women navigate through the emotional dynamics and dutiful realities of a relationship, building a love of quiet understanding and trust.

"Under the Tundra" is a visual and auditory gift by artistic director Pat Debenham. Its Scandinavian music is illustrated with a virtual Aurora Borealis of color, light, and motion.

The soaring group piece "Where Light is Made to Travel" created by Utah Valley University dance faculty member Amy Markgraf-Jacobsen is a gathering and scattering of motion and light.

The concert will end with a favorite from this years' "World of Dance," "Do Not Remove Under Penalty of Law" by Pat Debenham. Performed to three of Dvorjak’s Hungarian Dances, it is a proven laugh-out-loud romp where six-foot mattresses come to life.
