BYU Dancers' Company to present wide-ranging program Jan. 28-30

Brigham Young University’s Dancers’ Company under the direction of Pat Debenham will be presenting an innovative performance during “Dance in Concert” Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 28-30, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall, with a matinee at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Tickets are $12 and can be purchased online at byuarts.com, by phone at (801) 422-4322 or in person at the Harris Fine Arts Center Ticket Office.

It will be a dynamic mixture of movement, media and live music featuring the BYU Percussion Ensemble under the direction of Ron Brough, according to Debenham. “Dancers and musicians will join together in what will be a work of pure power, creating a visual, aural and kinetic tour de force.”

Guest choreographers for the concert include international artist and former Ririe-Woodbury dancer Stephanie Nugent; Andrew Madsen, a former cast member with the national touring company of “Wicked”; Arizona choreographer Carley Condor; and collaborators from Delaware and Texas in a unique long-distance choreographic work.

The concert will include “Landscapes,” a multimedia work that draws its inspiration from the power of the earth and the human spirit, and “Barefootin’ Suite” by Debenham, a group of dances to the music of Gladys Knight, Martha and the Vandellas, Irma Thomas and Robert Parker that pays homage to the past while still looking to the future.

Also featured on the program will be Stephanie Nugent’s contemporary work “Sub(stance),” which explores the inner kinetic and emotional world and what it means to be human. Two other favorites from last year’s “Dance in Concert,” “Light is Made to Travel” by Utah Valley University award-winning choreographer Amy Markgraf Jacobson and “Duet from Wreck” by Carl Flink, will also be performed.
