BYU dancEnsemble to present "Impetus" concert March 12-13

The Brigham Young University Department of Dance will present the dancEnsemble winter concert, “Impetus,” Friday and Saturday, March 12-13, in the Dance Studio Theatre, 166 Richards Building, at 7:30 p.m., with a 2 p.m. Saturday matinee.

Tickets are $6 and are available at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-7664 or at byuarts.com.

“Impetus” will feature a dynamic and entertaining selection of dances, according to dance faculty member Robin Konie. “With live music, props and visual support, this concert will use a variety of stimuli to bring a dynamic integration of media to the stage.”

This semester’s unique production will present works by both students and faculty. Undergraduate Koryl Wadsworth, joined by live guitarists, will present “Willing to Tune.”

“It’s been a learning experience to work with a composer and try to illustrate different approaches to connecting movement and music,” she said.

Other student works will include “Up the Tempo” by Erika Craveth, a piece that uses complex rhythms and varied accents to show a sense of being trapped in the rhythm, then escaping to freer, fuller movement.

In addition to a variety of student works, two faculty pieces will be presented. Marin Leggat will stage “Foundations,” which was originally choreographed and performed in New York City by a cast of interfaith dancers. The piece explores physical and spiritual foundations by asking the question, "What do I stand on?"

“Choreographing for dancEnsemble is unique because, in general, we all share similar beliefs,” Leggat said. “However, I hope this dance will highlight and celebrate the faith-building experiences of individuals in the cast.”

“Surrender of Pretense,” a piece by dancEnsemble Artistic Director Pam Musil, explores the natural flow of movement rather than forcing or contriving steps and shapes.

“This work is about discovering one’s own individuality and voice while honoring our place within the human family,” she said.
