BYU dancEnsemble to present fall concerts Nov. 14-15

The Brigham Young University Department of Dance presents dancEnsemble’s fall concert “Build Connections, Bridge the Divide” Friday and Saturday, Nov. 14-15, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theatre, 166 Richards Building.

Tickets are $6 and can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office by calling (801) 422-4322 or visiting byuarts.com.

dancEnsemble will present both student and faculty modern dance works. The concert will include student Rachel Clark’s work contrasting qualities of movement to create both comedic and shocking moments. Through creative processes, students’ inspiration for their works comes from many places.

“As I was walking down a busy hallway at BYU, I saw a huge, beautiful dragonfly lying dead, unmaimed, on the floor,” Clark said. “This was the inspiration for my piece.”

Another piece, choreographed by Stephanie White and Kelli Thredgold titled “Loose Jell-o,” shows how inside jokes create community and spark humor.

“Even though the audience won’t fully understand why, they will have a smile slapped on their faces,” said White. “We wanted to create a dance that was uniquely us and that would suck the audience into a cruise control ride to awesome.”

Along with the student works, two faculty pieces will also be presented. Arwen Rogers’ “Chung Kung Kuk Su Do Fu Ko” will feature props and kung fu to engage the audience in a piece of superhero proportion. Robin Konie’s piece, “Undercut,” will examine the dangers of selfishness in an increasingly competitive world.
