BYU dancEnsemble plans "Contemporary Canvas" concerts Nov. 12-13

Brigham Young University’s Department of Dance will be presenting a concert by its contemporary dance troupe dancEnsemble Friday and Saturday, Nov. 12-13, in the Richards Building Dance Studio Theatre, Room 166.

Shows will begin nightly at 7:30 p.m. with a matinee show Saturday at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased through the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322, or by going online to byuarts.com.

The show, “Contemporary Canvas,” is an annual concert that gives the opportunity to students and faculty to showcase their own choreographed works.

Two of the dances were inspired by students’ experiences while on a study abroad in China. “Grace: Beauty: Delight,” choreographed by Brooklyn Draper and Koryl Wadsworth, utilizes Chinese fans to create a visual, living art piece. “Ripple Effect,” by Micah McArthur, incorporates principles of Chinese painting into movement.

Kamarie Fernandez’s “The Argonne Forest” is a contemporary piece about Depression-era dance marathons. Many distressed Americans would enter these marathons and see how long they could stay on their feet in order to win a desperately needed cash prize.

Faculty member Pam Musil, artistic director of dancEnsemble, will present her new work about the daily need for repentance. The piece focuses on the idea that all people are equal, in that we all need redemption.

Susan Lloyd, another dance faculty member, will showcase “Airdogs.” “Airdog” is a snowboarding term for someone who focuses on jumps and aerial tricks. Her dance, complete with a snowboarding set, will highlight the extreme energy of the sport.

For more information, contact Pam Musil at pam_musil@byu.edu or call (801) 422-4873.
