BYU Crescent Jazz Festival Feb. 14-17 to honor Maynard Ferguson

Jazz performers from all over the nation will come together for a week of originality and high-quality music during the Brigham Young University Crescent Jazz Festival Wednesday through Saturday, Feb. 14-17, in the Harris Fine Arts Center.

  • Wednesday, Feb. 14: The Festival Kick-off Concert will feature the BYU Jazz Voices directed by Kelly Eisenhour at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

  • Thursday, Feb. 15: The BYU Jazz Legacy Concert, featuring BYU's Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band directed by Steve Call, will welcome guest artist Mike Lipskin, one of the few contemporary players to play consistently in the "Harlem Stride" piano style of Fats Waller, Art Tatum and Duke Ellington, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free.

  • Friday, Feb. 16: "Maynard Ferguson Tribute Concert: Into the Stratosphere," featuring Peter Erskine, Eric Miyashiro, Dave Pietro, the Crescent Festival Orchestra directed by Ray Smith, the Crescent Super Band directed by Caleb Chapman, the Juilliard Faculty Trio, Kelly Eisenhour and Salsiology directed by Denson Angulo will begin at 7 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. This concert, sponsored by the Utah Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau, is sold out.

  • Saturday, Feb. 17: "Maynard Ferguson Tribute Concert: High Voltage," featuring Bobby Shew, Roger Ingram, Denis DiBlasio, the Crescent Festival Orchestra directed by Ray Smith, Synthesis directed by Ray Smith, Q'd Up and the New Voodoo Swing Orchestra directed by Caleb Chapman, will begin at 7 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.     Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

    For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
