BYU Community Outreach Day, Walk of Life Jan. 19 to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.

Brigham Young University will host a Community Outreach Day and the annual Walk of Life Monday, Jan. 19, to commemorate the life and mission of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Community Outreach Day will begin at 9 a.m. with breakfast and a devotional in the Wilkinson Student Center Ballroom. Madison Sowell, BYU Honors Program director and associate dean of Undergraduate Education, will be the keynote speaker at the devotional.

Students are invited to devote the remainder of the day to service with on-campus service opportunities such as assembling children's school kits, painting toy cars and preparing for the evening's Walk of Life. Volunteers will also participate in more than 30 off-campus service projects.

Students, church organizations and large groups can preregister to participate in these projects by sending an e-mail to communityoutreachday@byu.edu or signing up the day of the event.

The community is invited to participate in the Walk of Life, which will begin with a candlelight procession at the Centennial Carillon Tower at 5:30 p.m. The procession will walk to the Wilkinson Student Center, where a program will be presented from 6 to 7 p.m.

Peter Johnson, assistant professor of accounting in the BYU Marriott School, will speak on the life and mission of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His speech will introduce BYU's Black History Month theme, “Where Do We Go From Here?”

“Dr. King wasn’t doing what he did just for African-Americans, he was doing it for humanity as a whole,” said Anthony Bates, advisor in Multicultural Student Services. “The things for which he fought and the successes he gained are just as important for all of us now as they were for African-Americans of his time.”

For more information, contact Anthony Bates at (801) 422-4739 or visit centerforservice.byu.edu or multicultural.byu.edu.
