BYU College of Nursing celebrates Homecoming with service

Meeting old friends makes for great alumni reunions, but for the last three years the Brigham Young University College of Nursing has sponsored a Homecoming service project in lieu of a social gathering. Between the Homecoming parade and the football game, alumni and students gather to assemble newborn kits for mothers in Utah County and several countries.

This year’s activity will be Saturday, Oct. 8, at 11 a.m. in the Nursing Learning Center, 130 Spencer W. Kimball Tower.

Students deliver these kits, which include blankets, clothes, hats, bars of soap and soft diapers  with safety pins, to women in Ecuador, Tonga, and Guatemala, as well as to a local program for young unwed mothers. All supplies are donated. Local Young Women’s programs give bibs they have made, other groups of LDS congregations donate blankets. Even the Y-Serve office in the Wilkinson Student Center has been busy for several semesters making hats for the newborns.

Last year, the event boasted 250 completed kits. This year, the college expects even more success as word spreads.

“We’ve been getting really good comments,” says Rose Ann Jarrett, public relations supervisor for the College of Nursing.  “It’s a wonderful opportunity to both reunite and do something worthwhile at the same time.”
