BYU College of Nursing celebrates 60 years with events April 6

In celebration of its 60-year history, the Brigham Young University College of Nursing will host nursing alumni, friends and students in a day-long event focused on “The Healer’s Art: Transforming the Future of Nursing” Friday, April 6.

The event will include distinguished speakers, a panel discussion, breakout sessions, class reunions, a service project and a celebration banquet. Elder Merrill J. Bateman, former BYU president and emeritus general authority of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will discuss “The Healer’s Art,” which is the guiding principle of the College of Nursing.

Keynote speaker Michael R. Bleich, former dean of the Oregon Health and Science University, was a member of the Institute of Medicine committee that wrote the 2011 report, “The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health.” He will address the report’s impact on health care and the role of nurses in bringing about changes outlined in the report.

In a panel discussion moderated by Kimberly Johnson, former network news anchor, high-profile alumni will discuss the impact of education on nursing practice, leadership and community outreach. Breakout sessions will provide additional opportunities for students and alumni to focus on professional opportunities.

BYU International Vice President and former dean of the College of Nursing Sandra Rogers will discuss the anniversary theme, “The Healer’s Art: Transforming the Future of Nursing,” in an address to alumni and guests during the evening celebratory banquet.

A book written by former Dean Elaine S. Marshall about the history of the BYU College of Nursing commemorates the people and events that brought the college to its present stature. The book will be available at the celebration for a nominal cost.

Registration for the event is available at ce.byu.edu/cw/nursing or by contacting BYU Conferences and Workshops, 877-221-6716. For additional information, call 801-422-4143.
