BYU choirs combine with Mt. San Antonio Chamber Singers in Feb. 28 concert

The Brigham Young University School of Music’s Men’s Chorus and Concert Choir, directed by Rosalind Hall, and the Mt. San Antonio Chamber Singers, directed by Bruce Rogers, will perform Tuesday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

Admission is free and open to the public.

The choirs will present the musical numbers they will be performing March 1-4 at the Western Division Convention of the American Choral Directors Association in Salt Lake City.

BYU’s Concert Choir will sing “A Prayer of the Middle Ages” by Howard Hanson, “Five Hebrew Love Songs” by Eric Whitacre and “Dances to Life” by Mack Wilberg. They will also perform “Fragments from the Mass” including “Gloria” from “Missa brevis” by Richard Rodney Bennett and “Sanctus” from “Mass for Double Chorus” by Frank Martin.

BYU Men’s Chorus will perform “A Mighty Fortress” attributed to Martin Luther and arranged by William Heyne and “Fight the Good Fight” by John Gardner, as well as “Three Sacred Texts,” including “Notre Père” by Frank Martin, “Gloria” by William Mathias and “Isaiah 44:3” by Jackson Berkey.

The Men’s Chorus will also sing songs from around the world, including the Lapland Chant “Dalvi duoddar luohti” by Seppo Paakunainen, the Japanese “Whale Festival” by Osama Shimizu, the Mexican “Las Amarillas” by Stephen Hatfield and the English “The Goslings” arranged by Rosalind Hall.

Founded in 1958 by Ralph Woodward, BYU’s Men’s Chorus performs a repertoire for men’s voices of all time periods, as well as folksongs, spirituals and novelty pieces.

The Mt. San Antonio College Chamber Singers will perform multicultural choral music wearing costumes from the various countries that their music represents, including Spain, France, Africa, Norway, Japan, Israel and Czech Republic.

The Chamber Singers, formed in 1994, consists of 35 singers who perform works from the Renaissance through new works of the 21st century.

Performing throughout Europe, the Chamber Singers have competed in the “International Musical Eisteddfod Competition” in Wales and the “Grand Prix Choir Competition” in Varna, Bulgaria, winning first place in both competitions.
