BYU chapter of national history society receives top award

The Brigham Young University Phi Alpha Theta chapter in the College of Family, Home, and Social Sciences was recently awarded the Best Chapter Award in the society's 2002-2003 national competition.

The BYU chapter of the history honor society won the Division VI award, which requires a university enrollment of more than 23,000 students. BYU last won the award in 2000.

A $250 award will be used to purchase books for the Harold B. Lee Library.

Donald J. Harreld, assistant professor of history and former faculty adviser for BYU's chapter, says the award shows the BYU History Department is serious about educating students.

"We are concerned about mentoring our students and giving our students the best experience they can have and helping them as they pursue their career in the future," he said.

The BYU chapter sponsors both academic and social activities designed to help students prepare for graduate studies, develop friendships with students who have similar interests and interact with faculty members.

The chapter also publishes an annual journal called "The Thetean." The journal publishes only student work and is blind-reviewed by a student-comprised committee.
