BYU Bookstore celebrates centennial with week of activities Oct. 9-13

The BYU Bookstore is celebrating its centennial by throwing a 100-Year Birthday Bash the week of Oct. 9 -13. The Bookstore will give out 100 gift cards to customers at the cash registers throughout the week and will give customers a chance to win a MacBook laptop or one of several iPod nanos.

In addition to the weeklong giveaways, the Bookstore will feature “1906 pricing” by offering 5 cent candy bars, along with special discounts on items such as iPods and books while supplies last.

  • Monday, Oct. 9, there will be free popcorn at the northeast (Cougareat) entrance of the Bookstore from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • Tuesday, Oct. 10, there will be birthday gifts available while supplies last.

  • Wednesday, Oct. 11 the Bookstore Barbecue will take place, with free hot dogs, chips and cupcakes in Brigham’s Square from noon to 1 p.m.

  • Thursday, Oct.12, there will be free soda at the northeast (Cougareat) entrance of the Bookstore from 11 a.m. to 1p.m.

  • Friday, Oct. 13, the winners of the 1.83 GHz MacBook laptop and five iPod nanos will be revealed at 2 p.m. The BYU Bookstore was originally called the Students’ Supply Association and began operations during the 1906-1907 school year under President George H. Brimhall’s administration. The association’s first home was practically a broom closet in the Brigham Young Academy Building. The store had room for only one employee to work at a time, and books and supplies were sold through the doorway.

Today, the BYU Bookstore is among the largest college bookstores in the country, employing nearly 300 student employees and 100 full-time employees. All profits from the BYU Bookstore go back to support the university.
