BYU Ballroom Dance Company to present “Viva España” April 10-11

The Brigham Young University Ballroom Dance Company will take center stage at the Marriott Center Friday and Saturday, April 10-11, at 7:30 p.m. to present its 2009 concert, “Viva España.”

A cast of 164 dancers will be featured during the 28th annual extravaganza at 7:30 p.m. each evening. There will also be a 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday. Tickets are $12 for the evening shows and $10 for the matinee at the Marriott Center Ticket Office, (801) 422-BYU1 or 1-800-322-BYU1, or online at www.byutickets.com.

"An audience of more than 10,000 enjoyed last year's performances, and this year will be even more exciting," said BYU dance faculty member Claudia Hill. "We have many new and fun numbers this year."

Audiences will enjoy the award-winning competition medleys, "Vive' Espana" choreographed with assistance from Alain Doucet and Anik Jolicoeur, World Ten Dance Champions, and "Drop That Beat" choreographed with assistance from Max Kozhevnikov and Yulia Zagoruychenko, U.S. Latin Champions and World Latin Finalists.

Jose De Camps and Joanna Zacharewicz choreographed a new mambo, "Oy'e Celia," and "Dance With My Father" is a beautiful rumba choreographed by Jean Marc Generous and France Mousseau. Toni Redpath also choreographed an elegant waltz, "A Daisy In December."

Whether performing a Latin American cha-cha or an elegant waltz, the Ballroom Dance Company has entertained audiences worldwide with its energy and enthusiasm. "Precise timing, flawless technique, expressive choreography and vibrant costumes complete the enchantment," said Hill.

Part of the largest collegiate ballroom dance program in the world, the group’s students come from all majors and backgrounds, said Hill. "Once onstage, however, these ordinary college students transform into a stunning performance ensemble."

The BYU Ballroom Dance Company has won the U.S. National Formation Dance Champion Team title consecutively since 1982, and since 1971 has received 19 first-place awards at the British Open Ballroom Dance Competition.
