BYU Ballroom Dance Company to "Light Up the Night" April 11-12

The Brigham Young University Ballroom Dance Company presents its annual concert "Light up the Night" Friday and Saturday, April 11 and 12, at 7:30 p.m. in the Marriott Center with a Saturday afternoon matinee at 2 p.m.

Tickets at $10 per person or $35 for a family Saturday matinee pass are available by calling the Marriott Center Ticket Office at (801) 378-byu1 or 1-800-322-byu1.

"Light Up the Night" will feature a cast of 170 dancers that will involve traditional forms of standard Latin ballroom dancing while incorporating new forms of dancing to create an exciting and innovative event.

The finale will literally "Light Up the Night" when all dancers take the floor for a new black-light hip-hop number titled "MicGalaxy" choreographed by Mic Thompson from Los Angeles.

"We have received the greatest response from the crowd during 'MicGalaxy' when we've performed it during our mid-semester tours," said Jeremy Gatlin, a member of the team. "The team loves to perform this number because it is completely different dancing than anything we're used to."

The show will also include new numbers including a samba choreographed by World Ten Dance champions Gary and Diana McDonald from New Jersey. A new rumba choreographed by U.S. Latin finalists James and Jaana Kunitz from San Diego will also be performed.

A new waltz has been choreographed by U.S. National American Smooth champion Toni Redpath from San Diego, and Lee Wakefield, BYU Ballroom Dance Company director, has choreographed a new theatre arts number, "All I Ask of You."

"The show should be really exciting," said Stephanie Rosen, a member of the back-up team. "We work so hard all year in preparation for concert. The show is really something people of all ages can enjoy."
