BYU Ballet Showcase Nov. 7-8 to feature variety of styles

The Brigham Young University Ballet Showcase will present a collection of choreography ranging from the classical pas de deux to contemporary styles Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7-8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theater, 166 Richards Building.

Tickets are $6 and can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office by calling (801) 422-4322 or visiting byuarts.com

The Ballet Showcase Company, under the direction of Artistic Director Kalise Child, will present five works. Four of the five are new works — three choreographed by Child and one by faculty member Marsha Russell.

“Drenched in Serenity” is a piece inspired by the calming effect of water. It contains soft arm movements and subtle, controlled footwork. The choreography will be supplemented by video footage.

Choreographed by Russell, “Libertango” features a pas de deux creating a tension within the piece. Russell uses several cannons in the piece emphasizing the dynamics of the music.

“The ‘Libertango’ piece contains a lot of flavor and style,” said Child. “The red and black dresses say it all—‘sassy.‘”

“Lament” is a classic and emotional solo performed in a long white dress.

Choreographed by faculty member Suzi Wood, “March Militaire” is a dynamic, classical piece with precise movements. Wood uses classical choreography to demonstrate the strength and power within the music.

“Out of Obscurity” is a contemporary piece containing varied dynamics and is a sharp contrast to “Lament.” Two black boxes used in the choreography create an added dimension to the piece.
