BYU appoints new dean of Student Life

Student Life Vice President Janet S. Scharman has announced the appointment of Vernon L. Heperi as dean of students at Brigham Young University.

Heperi has been serving as associate dean of students, and prior to that position was the director of BYU Multicultural Student Services.

"Vern has the training, experience and personal style to excel as dean of students," said Scharman. "In fact, Vern has spent a good portion of his professional life preparing for just such a responsibility."

"Beginning with his own involvement in student government and as a member of the Lamanite Generation (now Living Legends) at BYU, early on he caught the vision of what the 'BYU experience' could really be," she said. "His professional experiences have covered a broad range of student life areas at both Snow College and BYU. Students and colleagues alike report appreciating his vision, warmth and strong work ethic."

An alumnus of the Church College in New Zealand, Heperi received a master's degree in psychology from Utah State University and an Ed.D. in educational leadership from BYU.

Prior to joining the BYU Student Life division in 1996, Heperi was the coordinator of the TRIO program at Snow College, where he directed recruitment, academic advisement and counseling of new college students, and was later the director of student affairs supervising student government, activities and new student orientation.
