BYU Aerospace Studies welcomes new commander, faculty

The Brigham Young University Aerospace Studies Department welcomed three new professors fall semester, including a new commander of the BYU Air Force ROTC program.

Col. Lawrence S. Kingsley, professor of aerospace studies, became the new commander at BYU. Maj. John N. Armitstead and Maj. Mark E. Nugen are both assistant professors of aerospace studies. All three will stay for three years.

As commander, Kingsley will oversee one of the largest ROTC programs in the nation. Before coming to BYU, Kingsley was the commander of the 39th Maintenance Group stationed at Incirlik Air Base in Turkey, providing support for NATO's southern region and U.S. and coalition air forces deployed for Operation Northern Watch and Operation Enduring Freedom.

Kingsley graduated from Utah State University in 1977 with a bachelor's degree in political science. He received his master's degree in political science from Central Missouri State University in 1983.

Nugen recently served as a logistics officer for the transportation and munitions maintenance squadrons in the 75th Maintenance Group at Hill Air Force Base in Layton, Utah. After graduating from Florida State University in 1982, Nugen enlisted in the Air Force.

He has been awarded the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal, the Air Force Commendation medal with two oak leaf clusters and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with three oak leaf clusters.

Armitstead has served as a programmer in database and graphics software applications, the chief of data collection, management and analysis for a Joint Test Team organized under the Secretary of Defense and a project manager for the Air Force's premier war gaming simulation called "AWSIM" or the "Air Warfare Simulation.

He graduated from Utah State University in 1986 with a bachelor's degree in computer science and his master's degree in computer science in 1993.

Armitstead was commissioned in 1987 at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.
