Broadway's Lea Salonga makes Utah debut at BYU Sept. 2 and 7

Lea Salonga, Tony Award-winning Broadway star of “Miss Saigon” and “Les Misérables,” will present her Utah debut at Brigham Young University with an evening of Broadway and contemporary standards Friday, Sept. 2, and Wednesday, Sept. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

Tickets for the event are available through the Fine Arts Ticket Office at (801) 422-4322 or online at byuarts.com. Tickets range in price from $20 to $45, with $7 off with a BYU ID and $3 off for senior citizens or BYU alumni. The show is also part of the BYU Performing Arts Series and artsPASS season ticket packages.

Salonga is known for her Tony and Olivier Award-winning performance as Kim in “Miss Saigon” in London and New York. She was the first Asian to play Eponine in “Les Misérables” on Broadway and returned to the show as Fantine in the 2006 revival. She is also recognized as the singing voice of Princess Jasmine from the animated Disney film “Aladdin” and Fa Mulan in Disney’s “Mulan” and “Mulan II.”

Recently, Salonga participated in the 25th anniversary concert of “Les Misérables” at London’s O2 Arena, the film version of which has played on PBS stations across the country. She also impressed audiences as Grizabella in a limited run of “CATS” in her hometown of Manila.

As a child star in the Philippines, Salonga made her professional debut in 1978 at the age of seven in “The King and I.” She was ten when she made her first gold-certified recording, “Small Voice.” Her big break came when she was selected to play Kim in the musical “Miss Saigon” in 1989, for which she won an Olivier Award. She subsequently moved with the show to Broadway and garnered the Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and the Theatre World Awards for the same role.
