"The Big Sleep" next for BYU Archive Film Series Jan. 29

The L. Tom Perry Special Collections at the Harold B. Lee Library will be showing “The Big Sleep” as part of the Brigham Young University Motion Picture Archive Film Series. The 1946 film starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall will be shown Friday, Jan. 29, at the Harold B. Lee Library Auditorium at 7 p.m.

Admission is free, and doors for the event will open at 6:30 p.m. No food, drink or saving of seats is allowed. Children 8 years and older are welcome to attend.

James D’Arc, curator of the BYU Motion Picture Archive, will begin the event by presenting a behind-the-scenes look at the history and making of the film. His presentations in the film series include papers from the producer, director or an actor connected with the film and rare film prints.

“The Big Sleep” is an adaptation of the 1939 Raymond Chandler novel. Bogart plays detective Philip Marlowe and Bacall plays the love interest. The Warner Bros. picture was directed by Howard Hawks, who hired novelist William Faulkner to write the script along with a first-time novelist Leigh Brackett.

Shortly after the completion of the film, Bogart and his co-star were married in spite of their 25-year age difference. They even remained happily married until his death in 1957.

The BYU Motion Picture Archive Film Series is co-sponsored by the L. Tom Perry Special Collections, Friends of the Harold B. Lee Library and Dennis and Linda Gibson. A complete schedule of upcoming films may be accessed online at www.sc.lib.byu.edu.
