Berkeley professor to present BYU forum Nov. 18

Robert Alter, a professor of Hebrew and comparative literature at the University of California at Berkeley, will speak at a campus forum Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center at Brigham Young University.

The forum will be broadcast live on KBYU (Channel 11), KBYU-FM (89.1), BYU-Television and BYU-Radio satellite networks and on byubroadcasting.org.

It will be rebroadcast Sunday, Nov. 23, on KBYU-FM (89.1) at 8 p.m. and on BYU-Radio at 6 a.m. and 4 p.m. The forum will also be rebroadcast Sunday, Nov. 30, on KBYU (Channel 11) at 6 and 11 a.m., and on BYU-Television at 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Alter's lecture is titled "Dickens' Ecological Vision" and will discuss Charles Dickens' perspective on the ecological impact of the urban growth explosion in European cities in the 19th century.

Alter earned his bachelor's degree from Columbia University and his master's and doctoral degrees from Harvard University. He has taught at Berkeley since 1967 and is the Class of 1937 Professor of Hebrew and Comparative Literature. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the Council of Scholars of the Library of Congress.

He has been a senior fellow of the National Endowment for the Humanities, a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Jerusalem and Old Dominion fellow at Princeton University.
