Bassist Rex Surany to present recital, master class at BYU Jan. 20-21

The School of Music at Brigham Young University will present guest artist Rex Surany in a bass performance at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 21, at the Nelke Theatre on the second level of the Harris Fine Arts Center. His program will include pieces by Bach, Debussy, Kreisler and Franck.

Surany will also present a master class Thursday, Jan. 20, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in E378 Harris Fine Arts Center.

Both events are free, and the public is welcome to attend.

Surany is visiting BYU as a student from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he is tutored by Hal Robinson, the principal bassist of the Philadelphia Orchestra. In 2010, Surany won third prize in the Bradetich Foundation’s International Double Bass Solo Competition.

“BYU is one of the host schools for that competition, and we are excited to present this young and upcoming artist,” said associate bass professor Eric Hansen, who also studied under Robinson.

Surany also placed second in the orchestra division of the Double Bass Competition sponsored by the International Society of Bassists in 2009, making him a two-time award-winner for his music.
