Baritone J. Arden Hopkin to present recital of Spanish songs Sept. 12

J. Arden Hopkin, a professor in Brigham Young University’s School of Music, will present a baritone faculty recital, “Spain in Song,” at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center.

Hopkin will be accompanied by Larry Blackburn on the piano and Lawrence Green on the guitar. Admission to the recital is free.

The program will feature Spanish songs written over the course of the last 400 years, including “Cinco Canciones Negras” by Xavier Monslatge, “Tonadillas” by Enrique Granados and Tres Villancicos” by Joaquin Rodrigo.

Hopkin is the head of vocal studies and teaches studio voice and vocal pedagogy in the School of Music. He has also served as the artistic director for the Wasatch Chorale. During his time with the choir, they completed two CDs and performed the Mozart “Requiem” in Carnegie Hall.

He received his bachelor’s degree from BYU, his master’s degree from North Texas State University and his doctorate from the Eastman School of Music at the University of Rochester.

BYU research: Mega wildfires can actually be a good thing

BYU professor Sam St. Clair is the principal investigator on the first study to show positive impacts of megafires (fires greater than 100,000 acres) across different forest types. Megafires can help some forest communities thrive — especially in areas where chronic browsing by elk, deer, and livestock has hindered tree regeneration, a widespread issue that often leads to forest regeneration failure.
