Artist James Christensen, BYU Performing Groups Headline Homecoming Spectacular, Oct 16-17

Homecoming Spectacular

  • Thursday-Friday, October 16-17
  • 7:30 p.m.
  • Tickets: $14-25 at BYUTickets.org

Celebrated Utah fantasy artist James C. Christensen will take center stage at the Marriott Center during BYU Spectacular on October 16-17, at 7:30 p.m., and one of the fanciful creations that first made him famous more than 30 years ago will join him. Tickets are on sale now for the event (BYUTickets.com), which will also feature eight BYU performing groups and is part of the university’s annual Homecoming week activities.

Inspiration for this year’s program, called 'Take Flight' was taken from Christensen’s painting, Trying to Fly, and the 50th anniversary of the BYU Harris Fine Arts Center, which has been providing a home where the arts can thrive with concert halls, theaters, rehearsal rooms, classrooms and art galleries.

“Christensen has transcended all the art forms, because he paints dancers, musicians, and actors and through the gift of his art, he speaks to us,” said John C. Lewis, BYU associate advancement vice president, who oversees the Homecoming preparations. “To pair his work with a celebration of the remarkable artistic talent that has come to BYU, matured at BYU and then dispersed to the four corners of the earth will make for an outstanding evening.”

Spectacular will include performances by BYU’s Philharmonic Orchestra, Ballroom Dance Company, Men’s Chorus, Young Ambassadors, Living Legends, Contemporary Dance Theatre and International Folk Dance Ensemble. Audiences will be treated to a selection from Frank Wildhorn’s The Count of Monte Cristo, which will make its U.S. premiere at BYU in January.

Tickets for BYU Spectacular range from $14-25 and are available at BYUTickets.com.
