The Brigham Young University Museum of Art is pleased to announce a new exhibit, "Walk in Beauty: Hozho and Navajo Basketry," displaying 38 stunning Navajo Baskets, opening Thursday, April 3, and running through Saturday July 12, 2003. This exhibit explores Navajo basketry through the lens of hozho, the essential aspect of Navajo worldview. The creation, function and design of Navajo baskets illuminate the concept of hozho, a continual striving for balance, harmony and beauty. A 30-minute documentary film, "From the Inside Out," will accompany this exhibit and will screen daily at noon in the Museum of Art auditorium Monday through Saturday.

"On the Road with CCA Christensen: The Moving Panorama" will be on display at the BYU Museum of Art through September 8, 2003. This exhibit depicts the religious history of the world from Adam to the life of Joseph Smith, and the pioneers who entered the Salt Lake Valley.

"Past Tense: A Contemporary Dialogue" is on exhibit at the BYU Museum of Art now through May 3, 2003, featuring New York artists Valerie Atkisson, Lane Twitchell and Clara Williamsall recipients of the prestigious Rema Hort Mann Foundation Grant. The exhibit considers the way history continues to influence our Western identity. Admission to this exhibit is free.

The BYU Museum of Art's permanent collection, "150 Years of American Painting," which includes art from the Hudson River School of the Urban Realists, is on display.

"Artful Tales," a storytelling event, will continue every Monday night at the museum. Families and community groups are invited to the 7 p.m. session, and BYU Family Home Evening groups are welcome at the 8 p.m. session. Admission is free.

The Museum of Art is offering drawing classes for young artists ages 8 through 16. These classes are specially designed for students interested in improving drawing skills through practice and learning appreciation of works of art in the museum, either as part of the permanent collection or in special exhibitions. The museum is open Monday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m.

The premiere of "Archipelago," a riveting drama by LeeAnne Hill Adams and directed by Rodger Sorensen, recounts the imprisonment of Russian intellectuals and artists in the Gulag Archipelago by Stalin's secret police. "Archipelago" will be performed in the Pardoe Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $12 for the public and $9 for BYU faculty and students. The Madsen Recital Hall will be host to the Brigham Young University "Woodwind Chamber Night" at 7:30 p.m. Admission to this performance is free.

The Brigham Young University Flute Choir will present a free concert in the Madsen Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, April 2

The University Orchestra and University Strings will present a free chamber concert in the de Jong Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Thursday, April 3

KBYU-FM, Classical 89 presents "From the Podium" featuring lectures from the expertise and talents of members of the faculty and staff at Brigham Young University. Madison U. Sowell, BYU professor of Italian and comparative literature and professor of religion, will speak on "Dante's Christian Epic." The series will air at 9 p.m. on KBYU-FM, at 89.1 and 89.5 and online at www.kbyufm.org.

The Madsen Recital Hall will be host to the Brigham Young University "String Chamber Night" at 9:30 p.m. Admission to this performance is free.

Thursday, April 3 and Friday, April 4

The Brigham Young University Ballet Showcase Company will present its spring performance in the Dance Studio Theatre (166 Richards Building) at 7:30 p.m. Their repertoire will feature five faculty premieres and four student works. Tickets at $5 are available in the Fine Arts Ticket Office at (801) 378-4322 or www.byu.edu/hfac. Tickets are also available at the door.

The Brigham Young University Symphonic Band under the direction of Don Peterson will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

The Madsen Recital Hall will be host to the Brigham Young University "Brass Saxophone Chamber Night" at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission to this performance is free.

Friday, April 4

Brigham Young University's Vocal Point under the direction of Bob Ahlander will perform an electrifying concert of a cappella music at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Saturday, April 5

Brigham Young University welcomes guest clarinet artist Marian Liebowitz with Richard Thompson on the piano in a free concert at 4:30 p.m. in the Museum of Art auditorium.

Tuesday, April 8

The Brigham Young University Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Eric Hansen will perform a free concert in the de Jong Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Tuesday, April 8

Syncopation Vocal Jazz under the direction of Kristie Arnold will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall at Brigham Young University.

Wednesday, April 9

The Brigham Young University Band under the direction of Fred McInnis and the Brass and Trombone Choirs under the direction of Daniel Bachelder will present a free concert in the de Jong Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday, April 9

The Brigham Young University Group for New Music directed by Steven Ricks will present "Notes from England and Scotland" in the Madsen Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Admission to this performance is free.

Thursday, April 10

The Brigham Young University Jazz Lab Band will perform a free concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12

The Brigham Young University Ballroom Dance Company presents its annual concerts, "Light up the Night," in the Marriott Center at 7:30 p.m. with a Saturday afternoon matinee at 2 p.m. Tickets at $10 per person or $35 for a family Saturday matinee pass are available by calling the Marriott Center Ticket Office at (801) 378-BYU1 or 1-800-322-byu1.

The Brigham Young University Philharmonic Orchestra and combined BYU choirs will perform Gabriel Faure's "Requiem" under the direction of Kory Katseanes and Rosalind Hall. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Friday, April 11 and Saturday, April 12

Seniors in the Brigham Young University Music/Dance/Theatre program will travel to New York in late April to present a showcase of their talents to casting directors, agents and producers in the New York area. In preparation for their New York Showcase, 17 students will be presenting their audition material for the public during four performances on Friday and Saturday evening at 7 and 9 p.m. in the Dance Studio Theatre (166 Richards Building). Tickets at $5 for the general public are available at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 378-4322 or tickets at $6 can be purchased at the door. All proceeds from the presentation will help fund the New York Showcase project.
