Annual John Tanner Lecture at BYU to feature British professor March 30

Specialist in biomonitoring of the environment

The Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum at Brigham Young University will host Mark R. D. Seaward, professor at the University of Bradford in Bradford, United Kingdom, for the 18th annual John Tanner Distinguished Lecture Thursday, March 30, at 7 p.m. in the museum’s Tanner Auditorium.

Seaward will discuss “The Role of Lichens in Shaping Our World.”

A reception will precede the lecture at 6:30 p.m. on the main exhibit floor. Admission is free to both the reception and lecture, and the public is welcome.

Seaward serves as the honorary research professor of environmental biology at Bradford and researches biomonitoring of the environment, particularly in air pollution, heavy metals and radionuclides.

The author and editor of several books and papers, Seaward has worked as a consultant to the United Nations, as well as several national industries, legal practices, local authorities and governmental bodies at home and abroad. He also serves as a member of three European Union committees.

The John Tanner Lectureship, named after a 19th century Utah businessman who provided needed support to the westward movement and colonization of the Great Basin by Mormon pioneers, honors experts in fields of natural history. It began in 1989 with a donation by the John Tanner Family Organization.
