American Piano Duo to perform 20th-century American music Feb. 7

The American Piano Duo, composed of Brigham Young University faculty artist Jeffrey Shumway and guest artist Del Parkinson, will perform an evening of 20th-century American music Saturday, Feb. 7, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center.

The recital is free and the public is welcome.

The program will include the Symphonic Dances from “West Side Story,” Leonard Bernstein’s own adaptation of themes from the musical, and popular songs by George Gershwin. The performance will also include works by jazz legend Dave Brubeck and Pulitzer Prize-winner William Bolcom.

Shumway and Parkinson, a professor of piano at Boise State University, have performed as a duo since 1983. Their three Tantara Records releases include recordings of Rachmaninoff’s two-piano repertoire, a centennial tribute to George Gershwin and the world-premiere recording of Mendelssohn’s Concerto for Two Pianos in E major.Visit tantararecords.com for listening samples.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
