American perspectives on China topic of Oct. 1 BYU lecture

A Brigham Young University professor with expertise on the People's Republic of China will speak Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 11 a.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark.

Eric A. Hyer, associate professor of political science at BYU, will address the topic "American Perspectives on U.S.-China Relations" as part of the International Forum Series, sponsored by the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies.

Hyer serves as BYU's Special Country Focus liaison for China and has had extensive firsthand experience traveling and researching in the country.

Hyer earned his bachelor's degree at BYU in 1979 and his doctorate in political science from Columbia University in 1990.

Hyer began learning Chinese in Taiwan as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter–day Saints. Following his mission, Hyer studied Chinese at the Beijing Language Institute and later returned to China as a Fulbright scholar for the Foreign Affairs College in Beijing.
