Alan R. Harker new BYU associate academic vice president

President Cecil O. Samuelson has announced the appointment of Alan R. Harker as the new associate academic vice president for research and graduate studies at Brigham Young University.

Harker fills the post left by Brent W. Webb, who was recently named academic vice president. The appointment is effective Feb. 15.

A professor of microbiology and molecular biology, Harker was most recently an associate dean in the College of Life Sciences. “His service as been outstanding in this capacity,” said Samuelson. “Professor Harker is an outstanding teacher and researcher, having received awards in both areas.” 

The former chair of the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Biology, Harker received a bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry and a doctorate in biology, both from the University of Utah, and was a research fellow for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from 1985 to 1987.

He was a member of the faculty at Oklahoma State University before joining the BYU faculty in 1994. He has also been a research associate at Oregon State University and Washington State University. His research specialty is the microbial ecology and community dynamics of the Great Salt Lake.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
