Acclaimed Guarneri String Quartet to perform at BYU Nov. 8

The Guarnari String Quartet, “among the most revered and enduring ensembles of its kind in the world” according to National Public Radio, will present a concert at Brigham Young University Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

Quartet members include Arnold Steinhardt and John Dalley, violin; Michael Tree, viola; and Peter Wiley, cello. They will perform the String Quartet No. 2, Op. 17 by Béla Bartók; the String Quartet in D Major, Op. 20, No. 4 by Franz Joseph Haydn; and the String Quartet No. 1 in E Minor, “From My Life,” by Bedrich Smetana.

Tickets are $12 or $4 with a BYU or student ID and can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office by calling (801) 422-4322 or by visiting performances.byu.edu.

The ensemble will also present a free master class at 11 a.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, Harris Fine Arts Center. The public is welcome.

Since it was formed in 1964, the quartet has played in the most prestigious halls in North and South America, Mexico, Europe, Asia and Australia. The Guarneri has also been featured on many television and radio specials, documentaries and educational presentations, both in North America and abroad. In addition to mastering the finest works in the existing quartet repertoire, the Guarneri String Quartet is committed to performing and popularizing works by today's foremost composers

The Guarneri announced its retirement at the completion of the 2008-2009 season and has celebrated its retirement by doing what it does best — touring extensively throughout the United States as it has for nearly 45 years.

The quartet members continue their longstanding series and residency at the University of Maryland where they are on the faculty.
