9/11, the Balkans topics for David M. Kennedy lectures Oct. 18

The David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies at Brigham Young University will host two guest speakers on Wednesday, Oct. 18, in 238 Herald R. Clark Building:

  • Gordon Silverstein, assistant professor of political science at the University of California, Berkeley, will present a Global Awareness lecture, titled “Imbalance of Powers: Congress, the President and the Constitution after 9/11,” at noon. Silverstein teaches constitutional law, civil liberties, comparative constitutionalism and the separation of powers.

    The author of “Imbalance of Powers: Constitutional Interpretation and the Making of American Foreign Policy” (1997), he is working on a new book titled “How Law Kills Politics.”

  • “Endgame in the Balkans” is the topic of foreign correspondent Elizabeth Pond’s lecture at 2 p.m. Pond, a journalist based in Berlin, Germany, is a correspondent for the Washington Quarterly and editor of Transatlantic Internationale Politik. Her publications include “Endgame in the Balkans: Regime Change, European Style” (2006) and “Friendly Fire: The Near-Death of the Transatlantic Alliance” (2004). She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the German Council on Foreign Relations, the International Institute for Strategic Studies and Women in International Security.
