88th annual Campus Education Week at BYU Aug. 16-20

The 88th annual Campus Education Week at Brigham Young University will take place Aug. 16-20 at various locations throughout campus.

The theme for this year’s conference comes from the 88th section of the Doctrine and Covenants: “Teach one another words of wisdom.” The conference will offer more than 1,100 classes covering hundreds of topics including the family, finances, health and fitness, political science, music, parenting, self-improvement and single parenting, as well as 70 classes for youth.

Elder Steven E. Snow of the Presidency of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be the keynote speaker Tuesday, Aug. 17, at 11:10 a.m. in the Marriott Center. Visit byub.org/devotionals or speeches.byu.edu for rebroadcast and archive information.

“This year’s theme highlights the Lord’s desire that we instruct one another in order to strengthen our faith and be strengthened in the gospel,” said H. Bruce Payne, program administrator for Education Week.

Participants may register for the week, a day, a half-day or just a few hours. Advanced registration at reduced rates before Aug. 13 can be completed by calling (801) 422-8925, by mail, in person or at educationweek.byu.edu. At-the-door registration will be available throughout the conference at the northwest corner of the Marriott Center and in the Wilkinson Student Center Garden Court.

Anyone over the age of 14 can attend. Babies and young children are not permitted at any of the sessions.

“This year’s program offers presentations for youth and adults, women and men, married and single individuals,” Payne said. “With classes available in the areas of gospel principles, family and marriage relations, self-improvement, finance, education, youth and many others, you have an opportunity to gain insights that will be spiritually strengthening and that will foster your commitment to lifelong learning and service.”

The breakout classes will feature 168 returning faculty and 47 new presenters and will include such popular speakers as Susan Easton Black, John Bytheway, Sean Covey, Marvin Goldstein, Tom Holmoe, Brad Wilcox and others.

Information on television broadcasts of selected sessions from this year’s conference will be posted at ce.byu.edu/edweek/broadcasts.cfm.

Throughout the week, there will be nightly shows at the Harris Fine Arts Center. “Annie Get Your Gun” will be showing in the de Jong Concert Hall Tuesday through Friday at 7:30 p.m. “Tuesdays with Morrie,” based on the book by Mitch Albom, will be in the Pardoe Theatre Tuesday through Friday at 7 p.m.

Tamara Owald and Jeannine Goecheritz, principal harpist and flutist in the Orchestra at Temple Square, will also perform in the Madsen Recital Hall Tuesday and Wednesday at 8 p.m. There will also be “A Special Evening with Moon Light” in the Madsen Recital Hall Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m. This performance will feature composer Stephen Oliverson and his daughter Aubree.

Tickets for these performances are available now at byuarts.com or by visiting the Fine Arts Ticket Office in the Harris Fine Arts Center.

Volunteers are also needed for the week for part-day shifts. Volunteers must be 18 years old or older and be able to attend a training meeting Saturday, Aug. 14, at 10 a.m. Volunteers receive a free full-event name badge if they cover a shift for four consecutive days. Some general tasks include checking badges at the door, counting the number of attendees at a class and keeping the flow of students steady before and after classes. For questions on volunteering, call (801) 422-7589.

Campus housing is nearly full. For questions on current availability, call (801) 422-8925. The parking lot north of the Indoor Practice Facility will be available beginning Saturday, Aug. 14, on a first-come, first-served basis for completely self-contained RVs only. No electrical hookups, showers, restrooms or dumpsites will be available.

Parking areas can be found on the campus map at educationweek.byu.edu. Signs will also indicate which parking lots are available. To assist senior citizens and disabled participants, courtesy vans will run between on-campus housing and campus buildings.

For more information, call the Campus Education Week offices at (801) 422-2087 or visit educationweek.byu.edu.
