700 young scientists compete at this week's Central Utah Science and Engineering Fair

More than 700 young students in grades 5-12 from the southern end of Utah’s Wasatch Front are competing this week (March 22-25) for more than $30,000 in cash awards and scholarships at the Central Utah Science and Engineering Fair at the Brigham Young University Conference Center.

The young scientists are also vying for the opportunity to represent Central Utah at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the world’s largest pre-college science competition.

John Gardner (801-422-2202, john_gardner@byu.edu), director of the BYU Microscopy Lab in the BYU Department of Integrative Biology, directs the fair.

Lisa Clarke (801-422-1987, lisa_clarke@byu.edu), a joint employee of the BYU-Public School Partnership and the McKay School of Education, manages the day-to-day work to develop the fair and students’ abilities to compete.

The fair is open to students from Alpine, Jordan, Nebo, Provo, Canyons and Wasatch School Districts.

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
