34th Annual Summer Institute of Applied Statistics at BYU June 17-19

Brigham Young University’s Department of Statistics will host the 34th Annual Summer Institute of Applied Statistics, “Exploring Data Visually,” Wednesday through Friday, June 17-19.

The conference will feature Di Cook, a professor of statistics at Iowa State University, who will address the theme “Exploring Data Visually.” In a technological age of masses of words and numbers stored in computers, her course will teach the process of extracting knowledge from data, using interactive graphics as an integral part of the statistical analysis.

Registration is $450 for academic registration by May 27 or $600 after May 27. Nonacademic registration is $700 by May 27 or $850 after May 27. To register, visit statistics.byu.edu/summer_institute/registration. The conference will include workshop sessions for three days, as well as a golf tournament and barbecue.

Students will learn about graphical methods for multivariate data, handling missing values, supervised classification, cluster analysis, longitudinal data, network data and visual inference. For more information about the software, visit r-project.org or ggobi.org.

Cook is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and is the recipient of several awards and grants. Her research interests include dynamic graphics, exploratory data analysis, multivariate methods and statistical computing. She received her master’s and doctorate degrees from Rutgers University.

For more information or to register, contact Kathi Carter at (801) 422-4506 or visit statistics.byu.edu/summer_institute.
