24th Symposium on Books for Young Readers at BYU July 14-15

Brigham Young University will host the 24th Symposium on Books for Young Readers, a two-day conference for librarians, teachers, parents and anyone who enjoys children’s literature, Thursday and Friday, July 14–15, at the Gordon B. Hinckley Alumni and Visitors Center.

Registration fees range from $205 with college credit, $175 for regular registration, $135 for Thursday-only, and $105 for Friday-only. Discounted prices for full-time undergraduate students are $25 and $10. Register online at bfyr.byu.edu before Thursday, July 7, by phone at (801) 422-8925 or in person at 120 Harman Continuing Education Building. At-the-door registrations will be accepted on a space-available basis.

The symposium will feature six nationally known authors and illustrators of children’s literature including Gennady Spirin, author of “A Apple Pie,” “The Story of Noah and the Ark” and “The Easter Story”; Robert Burleigh, author of “Home Run: The Story of Babe Ruth,” “A Painter’s Journey” and Abraham Lincoln Comes Home”; Susan Meddaugh, author of the award-winning “Martha Speaks”; Rebecca Stead, author of “When You Reach Me” and “First Light”; Mary Downing Hahn, author of “The Doll in the Garden,” “A Time for Andrew” and “Closed for the Season”; and David Wiesner, author of the Caldecott Medal-winner “Tuesday,” “The Three Pigs” and “Flotsam.”     

The presenters will share their perspectives on children’s literature and be available for question-and-answer sessions. In addition, two autograph sessions and four informal discussion groups with individual authors will be available.

This event is sponsored by BYU’s Department of Teacher Education, the Harold B. Lee Library, the Division of Continuing Education, the BYU Bookstore and the Provo City Library.

BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
