21st Books for Young Readers Symposium at BYU July 17-18

Six nationally known authors and illustrators will share their unique perspectives on children’s literature during the 21st Brigham Young University Symposium on Books for Young Readers Thursday and Friday, July 17 and 18.

The two-day symposium is for librarians, teachers, parents and anyone who enjoys children literature. Non-credit registration is $89 for Friday, $119 for Thursday or $159 for both days. Credit registration is $189 for both days. All registration packages except the non-credit, Friday-only option include one ticket for the Thursday-evening banquet. Extra banquet tickets are $20 each.

The nationally acclaimed authors and illustrators presenting at the conference will host lectures, question-and-answer sessions and informal discussion groups. The presenters are:

• Candace Fleming, a best-selling author of numerous critically acclaimed books for young children. Her book “Boxes for Katie” was awarded Publishers Weekly Best Book of 2003.

• Jennifer Holm, the Newbery Honor-winning author of “Penny from Heaven,” “Our Only May Amelia” and several other highly praised books.

• X.J. Kennedy, who received the 2000 National Council of Teachers of English Award for Excellence in Children’s Poetry and author of 18 children’s books.

• Wendell Minor, an award-winning illustrator of more than 40 picture books for children, including Robert Burleigh’s award-winning “Into the Woods.”

• Kenneth Oppel, author of the international best-selling “Silverwing” trilogy. The sequel to his book “Airborn,” Oppel’s “Skybreaker” was a New York Times best-seller and was selected as a 2006 Best Book for Young Adults by the American Library Association.

• Vivian Vande Velde, author of fantasy and mystery novels for young readers. Her book “Never Trust a Dead Man” received the 2000 Edgar Award in the Young Adult category, and three of her books have been named ALA Best Books for Young Adults.

The Provo City Library and the BYU Bookstore, Department of Teacher Education, Harold B. Lee Library and Division of Continuing Education are the symposium’s sponsors.
