21st Annual BYU Hunger Banquet March 19 illustrates world food disparity

Offering diners a visual and culinary representation of global wealth disparity, the 21st Annual Brigham Young University Hunger Banquet will be Saturday, March 19, in the Smith Fieldhouse.

Open to the public, tickets are on sale for $8 at 237 Herald R. Clark Building or $9 at the door. The event begins with an Involvement Fair at 6:30 p.m., and seating will begin at 7 p.m.

Steven Dorsey, director of the Peace Corps in Costa Rica, is the keynote speaker this year and will address how students and community members can emulate this year’s Hunger Banquet theme, “Peace by Piece.”

The Hunger Banquet is first and foremost an academic event meant to enrich the educational experience of students by exhibiting the many resources on campus that will help focus their education on effecting positive social change. On-campus entities, as well as other BYU-affiliated programs and organizations, will be present at the event to educate students about internships and many other academic opportunities.

As always, diners will be randomly assigned to sit in a high-, middle- or low-income area and provided a meal corresponding to their assigned income class.

In conjunction with the Hunger Banquet, the artwork from the Second Annual Creative Competition, illustrating the same theme “Peace by Piece,” is being shown on the first and second floors of the David M. Kennedy Center through Friday, March 25. All creative media were accepted for display.

A Creative Competition Gala will be held in the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies  Thursday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m. to recognize and hear performances from various artists.

The Hunger Banquet and Creative Competition are being sponsored by the David M. Kennedy Center, the Ballard Center for Economic Self-Reliance, the international development minor, BYU Dining Services and the academic club Students for International Development.
