5 — The Annual BYU Faculty Art Exhibition will be shown at the B.F. Larsen Gallery and Gallery 303 in the Harris Fine Arts Center from Aug. 5 – Sept. 11, 2009.

SEPTEMBER 2009

4 — To begin the 2009-2010 BYU Performing Arts Season, acclaimed danseuse Yogini Gandhi and troupe will present an evening of classical Indian dance at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. A combination of talent, intellect and beauty, Yogini is one of the very few dancers who can perform two Indian classical dance styles — Kathak and Odissi — with equal dexterity and virtuosity. 11-19 — The Pardoe Theatre will open the year with “The Taffetas,” a production by Rick Lewis, from Sept. 11-19 at 7:30 p.m. Dress rehearsals are Sept. 9-11. Directed by George Nelson, an associate professor in theatre and media arts, “The Taffetas” is about four sisters about to make their television debut. They sing 50s hits such as “Sh-Boom,” “Mr. Sandman” and “Johnny Angel” with the hopes of putting a smile on the audience’s faces. 15-26 — The Margetts Series will start out the season with Shakespeare’s last work, “The Tempest,” which will run Sept. 15-26 at 7:30 p.m. in the Nelke Theatre. This production will be put on by the Young Company, a student company, and will be adapted into a one-hour production for families. The story is about a magician-king and his daughter who have been banished to an island populated by fairies. They are finally given the chance to return home but before they do they must negotiate between forgiveness and revenge, magic and power, betrayal and love. Saturday matinee showings, at 2 and 4 p.m., will take place Sept. 19 and 26. There will be no performances Sundays or Mondays. 16-19 — BYU’s Ballroom Dance Company, International Folk Dance Ensemble, Theatre Ballet and Dancers’ Company will join forces to showcase “World of Dance.” Three shows will take place at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday through Friday. On Saturday, Sept. 19, there will be two shows at 2 and 7:30 p.m. All showings will take place in the de Jong Concert Hall, and tickets will be available beginning Aug. 17 at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322 or at arts.byu.edu.

17 — Trombonist Stuart Dempster will perform as a guest artist in the Madsen Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Although he is mostly known for his trombone work, he has also performed with many things including garden hoses, pipes, the didjeridu and conch shells. Dempster is a former faculty member at the University of Washington. He will be performing with BYU professor Christian Asplund. Admission is free.

17 — “Types and Shadows: Intimations of Divinity” will be on display in the Museum of Art from Sept. 17, 2009, to March 13, 2010. Using the structures of metaphor and analogy from the language of the scriptures, this exhibition of traditional and contemporary works will enlighten the hearts and the minds of viewers as they participate in the process of seeking out and unraveling the types and shadows contained in these works that “point to” the Savior’s divine mission. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.,Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

18 — In the Madsen Recital Hall, husband-and-wife team Wang Jian-xin and Li Feng-yun, both professors at Tianjin Conservatory of Music in Beijing, will perform. They have mastered the art of playing the ancient Chinese instruments of qin and xiao. Individual tickets will be available Aug. 10. 21 — A special showing of the classic Greek tragedy “The Bakkhai” will be presented at 5 p.m. The performance will be in connection with the University of Utah’s 39th Annual Classical Greek Theatre Festival. 24-25 — The fall semester “Choir Showcase” will feature the BYU Singers, Concert Choir, Men’s Chorus and Women’s Chorus at 7:30 p.m. Ticket sales begin Aug. 24 and can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322 or at arts.byu.edu.

29 — The American Piano Quartet, with BYU’s Jeffrey Shumway, Robin Hancock, Scott Holden and Paul Pollei, will perform in the de Jong Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. They will perform as part of the Music Scholarship Series. 30 — The “Jazz Showcase” will feature BYU’s Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band and Synthesis at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Tickets can be purchased starting Aug. 31 at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322 or at arts.byu.edu.

OCTOBER 2009

1 — The “Instrumental Showcase” will feature the BYU Philharmonic, Symphony Orchestra, Symphonic Band, Percussion Ensemble and Wind Symphony at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Tickets will be available starting Aug. 31 at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322 or at arts.byu.edu.

6 — A group of faculty chamber artists will perform in the Madsen Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Jeffrey Shumway will be featured on the piano, Monte Belknap on the violin, Julie Bevan on the cello and Jaren Hinckley on the clarinet Tickets will be available starting Sept. 8 at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322 or at arts.byu.edu.

22 — “Mirror Mirror: Contemporary Portraits and the Fugitive Self” will be exhibited at the Museum of Art Oct. 22, 2009, through May 8, 2010. With the increase of social networking sites, cell phones and YouTube, how we portray ourselves is always changing. This exhibition will explore how we shape our identities in an expanding global society and how living artists create artworks in an effort to discover who we are. Admission is free. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.,Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

9 — Guest artists from Theatre Mitu will present Arthur Miller’s classic American drama “Death of a Salesman” utilizing ancient Japanese Bunraku puppetry techniques mixed with contemporary theatrical storytelling methods. 15 — Director Steve Call will conduct BYU’s Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band in the Madsen Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. This event is free.

15 — The Third Annual BYU Exhibition and Art Sale will take place at the B.F. Larsen Gallery in the Harris Fine Arts Center at 7 p.m. All proceeds will go to benefit the Provo Food Bank.

17 — Orpheus Winds features five BYU faculty members — April Clayton (flute), Jaren Hinckley (clarinet), Geralyn Giovannetti (oboe), Christian Smith (bassoon) and Laurence Lowe (horn) — performing in the Madsen Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Tickets will be available starting Sept. 14 at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322 or at arts.byu.edu.

20 — Group for New Music will feature a wide and engaging variety of recently composed music performed by BYU students and faculty in the Madsen Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

21-24 —Offenbach’s “The Tales of Hoffmann,” based on three short stories by E.T.A. Hoffmann, will be presented. Directed by Lawrence Vincent, it will feature top student vocalists and the BYU Philharmonic Orchestra in the de Jong Concert Hall. The story depicts Hoffmann’s tales of lost love and inspiration found on his magical journey of romantic adventures in search of true love. It will be performed in French with English supertitles. Two dress rehearsals Oct. 17 and 20 will be $10. All shows start at 7 p.m.

22 — OcTUBAfest will feature a tuba and euphonium student recital at 7:30 p.m. The recital will be held in the Madsen Recital Hall, and admission is free.

22-23 — “Homecoming Spectacular 2009: Reach for the Summit” will showcase some of the best talent BYU has to offer at 7:30 p.m. in the Marriott Center. 23 — OcTUBAfest will feature faculty artist Steve Call on the tuba at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission is free. Call has been at BYU since 1979 and teaches courses in jazz keyboard, jazz combo and jazz history. He is the director of the award-winning Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band.

24 — OcTUBAfest will culminate in the “Grand OcTUBAfest Concert” at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall featuring the BYU Tuba and Euphonium Ensemble. Admission is free.

28-29 — The King’s Singers will return to the de Jong Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday’s performance will bring them together with the BYU Singers, while Thursday’s concert will feature the King’s Singers with the BYU Philharmonic Orchestra and Concert Choir in a pops concert. 28 — From Oct. 30 to Nov. 14, Alan Ayckbourn’s play “Absent Friends” will be showcased in the Margetts Theatre. “Absent Friends” is a dark comedy by a master of contemporary drama about a woman, Diana, who invites her friend Colin over for tea after his fiancée dies. You'll laugh and cringe as the group of old friends fight and Colin tries to do the consoling. Tempers and patience boil over in this British satire of middle-class mentalities and materialism. Dress rehearsals Oct. 28 and 29 will be $10. There will also be a Saturday matinee on Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. There will be no performances Sundays or Mondays. 30 — As part of the BYU Music Scholarship Series, the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band will play in the de Jong Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. The concert will be directed by Donald Peterson and Kirt Saville. 3 — The BYU’s Men’s Chorus and Women’s Chorus will perform under conductors Rosalind Hall and Jean Applonie at 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. 4 — Jazz Combo Night will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. The concert is free.

5 — The Utah Symphony will perform in the de Jong Concert Hall. The concert will feature conductor Pinchas Zukerman, a 21-time Grammy nominee, and pianist Jonathan Biss. They will perform Brahms’ Concerto No. 1 for piano in D minor and Brahms’ Symphony No. 4 in E minor. 11 — BYU composition majors will perform original works in the Madsen Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. The concert is free.

11 — Next on the BYU stage will be “Children of Eden” by Steven Schwartz playing from Nov. 13 to Dec. 5 (excluding Nov. 22-30) at the Pardoe Theatre. This musical retells the stories of Adam and Eve and Noah from the book of Genesis. The play focuses on the relationships between the Father and his children. It reveals that every family has challenges, but leaves behind a powerful legacy for future generations. There will be dress rehearsals Nov. 11-12 and a Saturday matinee Nov. 21 at 2 p.m. There will be no performances Sundays or Mondays. 13 - Malcolm Goldstein, a New York-based composer/violinist, has been performing since the 1960s. He has participated in the New York Festival of the Avant Garde and has since toured throughout North America and Europe. He will be performing at BYU at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. 18 — Synthesis, BYU’s acclaimed big band, will perform at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Under Ray Smith, Synthesis combines swing, blues, jazz, Latin and fusion styles into the best of jazz entertainment. Some of BYU’s finest and most able musicians, perform, arrange and compose for this award-winning ensemble. 20 — BYU’s Panoramic Steel and Percussion Ensemble will perform with Gamelan Bintang Wahyu in a joint concert at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall. Tickets are $11 or $8 with a BYU or student ID. The newly founded Gamelan Bintang Wahyu group performs Balinese music using special Indonesian instruments. 1 — The University Orchestra will perform in the de Jong Conert Hall at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.

2-5, 8-10 — BYU’s New Play Festival will feature three works by BYU students. “For Dear Life” by Matthew Greene, “The Monster of Dr. Frankenstein” by Zach Kempf and “Tre Sorelle” by Katherine Gee will be shown at 7:30 p.m. in the Margetts Theatre. 3 — Beginning Dec. 3, 100 paintings, works on paper and sculpture representing some of the key pieces from the BYU Museum of Art will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the university’s art collection. The exhibition, “The First 100 Years: Collecting Art at BYU,” runs until Sept. 25, 2010. The museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.,Thursday evening from 6 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

3 — The Jazz Lab Band will perform in a free concert at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

4 — A “Songwriter Showcase” will feature new songwriters performing their works in the Madsen Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. The concert is free.

4-5 — “Christmas Around the World” featuring the BYU International Folk Dance Ensemble will celebrate its 50th anniversary in the Marriott Center. 7 — The winter semester concert calendar at BYU will open with the Utah Symphony performing with Stewart Goodyear on the piano and Roberto Minczuk conducting in the de Jong Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. Minczuk, the conductor for the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra, will lead them in three works, including Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 2 and Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 in E minor. 12, 14, 16 — The BYU Young Artists of Voice competition will be held in the Madsen Recital Hall, with preliminary rounds Tuesday and Thursday at 7:30 p.m. that are free to the public. The finals round will take place in the Madsen Recital Hall Saturday at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for Saturday’s event are $6 and go on sale Dec. 7. 15-16 — Living Legends combines traditional and contemporary music with the color and vitality of Native American, Polynesian and Latin American dances, performed by talented descendants of these cultures. 20 — Q'd Up is a faculty combo that delivers some brilliant contemporary jazz. The band features Ray Smith on reeds, Steve Lindeman on keyboard, Matt Larsen on bass and two drummer/percussionists, Ron Brough and Jay Lawrence. 22 — “Tartuffe” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. in the Pardoe Theatre. Performances will run from Jan. 22 to Feb. 6. Written by one of the greatest comedic playwrights of all time, Molière, “Tartuffe” features the story of Orgon who, in the twilight of his life, has decided to give all his worldly possessions to a holy man named Tartuffe. However, this holy man isn’t all that he seems to be, and Orgon’s family must convince him to abandon his folly. 28-30 — “Dance in Concert” featuring the Dancers’ Company under the direction of Pat Debenham will perform Thursday and Friday at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 2 and 7:30 p.m. All performances will be in the de Jong Concert Hall. 28 — Now in its eighth year, Utah Crosstalk presents electronic music at the cutting edge, created and performed by BYU and University of Utah student and faculty composers. This evening’s concert includes works for surround sound, live electronics and live instrumental and vocal performers with electronics. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall and is free.

2-3 — The New Shanghai Circus will perform in the de Jong Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. The presentation of Chinese circus acts dates back 2,000 years ago to the harvest festivals. This contemporary performance is described as “feats of circus art that reach literally breathtaking heights of skill,” by The New York Times. 2-13 — BYU’s Young Company will present a theatre-for-young-audiences production of “A Thousand Cranes” by Kathryn Shultz Miller. It is the award-winning true story of Sadako, a Japanese girl who, 10 years after Hiroshima was bombed in WWII, discovers she has “radiation sickness.” While in the hospital she learns of the legend of 1,000 paper cranes, and begins folding. Smith has created a style of improvisation on violin and viola that is uniquely her own. She has performed at practically every major improvisation festival and many of the New Music Festivals. She has toured Europe on numerous occasions, playing solo and in collaboration with local musicians. Her travels have taken her to the former USSR, Siberia and Japan.

5-20 — Federico Garcia Lorca’s “Blood Wedding” will be presented in the Margetts Theatre. On the evening of her wedding day, a young bride deserts her newlywed husband and runs away with her former love. Exploring themes of family, honor and death, this tragic masterpiece is considered the greatest Spanish play of the 20th century. Lorca weaves together poetry, folk music and striking visual images to tell the heart-wrenching story of the three ill-fated lovers. 5 — Composer-pianist Keith Kirchoff returns to BYU to present a program of electro-acoustic music for the piano. The program, which includes three works specially commissioned for this event, explores several completely different aspects of electro-acoustic performance. The central work of the program is the premiere of a new multimedia work by BYU faculty member Steve Ricks. The program also features a duet for piano and “Nintendo Wii” by Roberto Morales, the wildly virtuosic “Rip” by Allen Strange, and Kirchoff’s own “The Adventures of Norby.” This recital is designed for all listeners and will be presented in a casual lecture/recital format. It will be presented in the Madsen Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. and is free.

6 — In honor of William Primrose, the best-known violist of all time, BYU continues its yearly William Primrose Memorial Concert. Primrose was a faculty member at BYU from 1979- 1982 and later passed away in Provo, Utah. “[He] is to the viola what Michael Jordan is to basketball — singular, one-of-a-kind, unique, virtuoso,” said BYU emeritus faculty member David Dalton, who worked with Primrose. The concert will be held in the Madsen Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. and is free.

9 — BYU’s Group for New Music will feature a wide and engaging variety of recently composed music performed by BYU students and faculty. The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. It is free.

12 — “If it’s possible for a classically trained wind quintet to rock the house, Imani Winds blows the roof off,” said NPR’s All Things Considered. 28 — Children’s author Rick Walton has created an interactive family production titled “Mysteries of Monster Grove” which will be staged in the Nelke Theatre at 7:30 p.m. May 28-June 12. The play is about Sylvia, whose parents are accountants for classic monsters like Count Dracula. Things are great until the day her father mysteriously vanishes. Sylvia sets out to solve the mystery of her father's disappearance and solves a few other puzzles along the way. Walton has created a production just for BYU that will require the audience to help solve the mystery by voting on the ending. Dress rehearsals at $6 will be available May 26-27, and matinees at $6 will be shown June 3, 5, 11 and 12 at 2 p.m. There will be no performances Sundays or Mondays.
